Moving to Halton From Toronto: A Relocation Guide

By Steve Bulatovic · 6 min read

Every year, thousands of people make the move from Toronto to Halton Region in search of more space, better value, and a different pace of life — without giving up access to the city. If you're considering the move, here's an honest look at the trade-offs and what to expect in each of Halton's four communities.

What you gain

The headline reason most people move from Toronto to Halton is space and value. Rents and home prices stretch further here, you're more likely to get a yard and a driveway, and the density drops noticeably. Halton also consistently scores well on safety, schools, and access to parks and trails. For families especially, the calculus often tips toward Halton once kids and schools enter the picture.

What changes

The main trade-off is the commute. While Halton has excellent GO Train service, you're trading a short urban commute for a longer regional one. From Oakville, downtown Toronto is about 35 minutes by GO; from Milton or Georgetown, it's longer. If you're in the office daily, factor the commute honestly. If you work hybrid or remote, the trade-off becomes much more attractive.

You'll also be more car-dependent than in central Toronto. Halton's transit is good by suburban standards but not a substitute for the TTC. Most households here have at least one car.

Choosing your community

Oakville is the premium choice — top schools, lakeside lifestyle, the shortest Halton commute to Toronto, and prices to match. Burlington offers a similar lakeside appeal at a slightly more accessible price point, with a charming downtown and a strong sense of community. Milton is the value-and-growth option — newer housing stock, a young population, and the fastest growth in the region, though a longer commute. Halton Hills (Georgetown and Acton) offers the most space and small-town feel for the money, with the longest commute of the four.

Do your homework on neighbourhoods

Halton's communities each have distinct neighbourhoods with different characters, price points, and school catchments. Before committing, research the specific area — not just the city. Our sister sites can help: OntarioSchoolRankings.ca for school comparisons, RateMyNeighbourhood.ca for neighbourhood research, and OntarioDaycareRanking.ca if you have little ones.

Renting first is smart

If you're moving from Toronto and aren't yet sure which Halton community fits, renting for a year is a smart way to test-drive the area before buying. It lets you learn the commute, try the neighbourhood, and get a feel for the community without committing hundreds of thousands of dollars. We help Toronto transplants find the right Halton rental every week — and when you're ready to buy, we can help with that too.
