Burlington vs Oakville: Which Is Better for Renters?
By Steve Bulatovic · 5 min read
Burlington and Oakville sit side by side on Lake Ontario, both consistently ranked among Canada's best places to live. For renters deciding between them, the differences are real but subtle. Here's an honest side-by-side to help you choose.
Cost
Oakville generally commands higher rents than Burlington for comparable properties, particularly in the premium neighbourhoods near the lake and in top school catchments. Burlington offers similar lakeside appeal and quality of life, often at a somewhat more accessible price point. If budget is a primary driver and you want lakeside living, Burlington frequently delivers more for the money.
Commute to Toronto
Both cities have GO Train service to downtown Toronto. Oakville's GO connection is slightly faster to Union Station, which matters if you commute downtown daily. Burlington's commute is marginally longer but still very manageable, and Burlington also offers good highway access via the QEW and 403.
Schools
Oakville has a particularly strong reputation for its schools, including several top-ranked public and private options, which is a major draw for families and a key reason Oakville rents carry a premium. Burlington also has strong schools. If specific school catchment is critical to your decision, research the individual schools rather than relying on the city's overall reputation — you can compare them at OntarioSchoolRankings.ca.
Lifestyle and character
Oakville's downtown has an upscale, polished feel, with boutique shopping and waterfront dining. Burlington's downtown is lively and community-oriented, anchored by Spencer Smith Park and the waterfront festival scene. Both offer excellent trails, parks, and lake access. The choice here comes down to personal taste — Oakville leans refined, Burlington leans friendly and energetic.
The verdict
There's no wrong answer — both are excellent. Choose Oakville if top schools and the fastest Halton commute to Toronto are your priorities and the budget works. Choose Burlington if you want comparable lakeside quality of life with a bit more value and a friendly downtown vibe. The best way to decide is to spend time in the specific neighbourhoods you're considering in each city.
